The City of Williamston, Michigan has a great opportunity for a new Police Chief.  Williamston is a city of nearly 4,000 residents located 20 miles east of Lansing operating under the Council-Manager form of government. The new Police Chief will lead a department consisting of an operations assistant and six full-time sworn officers.

The current Police Chief is retiring after 10 years of service to the community, which opens the door for a leader who is community-oriented, collaborative, and willing to embrace and build on Williamston’s small-town culture.  While education and law enforcement experience are important, the City is most interested in candidates who understand our culture and do not view themselves as a change agent. To be an effective leader of this team, the new Police Chief will have to maintain an open, transparent communication style; be responsive and decisive; and seek input on department improvements and changes.  We seek a leader who is attuned to the daily needs of the department but is not a micro-manager.

Williamston Police Department is well-respected by the community, as evidenced by policing consistently rating as one of the services most valued by residents.  To that end, the next Police Chief must have a foremost commitment to engaging with the community by being highly visible and accessible to the public.

To be considered a qualified applicant, respondents are expected to have minimally attained:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent level of training and experience.
  • Seven or more years of progressively more responsible experience in the law enforcement field, including experience as a command officer.
  • Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards certification as a Police Officer.

Preferred credentials include:

  • Graduate of one of the following or equivalent leadership or command school:  Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Northwestern Staff & Command, Southern Police Institute, or Michigan State University Police Executive Development Series.
