Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption, Form 5107
Veteran's Property Tax Exemption
A property tax exemption is available for disabled veterans. Michigan law provides an exemption from property taxes for real property owned and used as a homestead by a qualifying disabled veteran who served in the United States Armed Forces (including reserve components) and who was discharged or released under honorable conditions.
Applications
The disabled veteran (or the unremarried surviving spouse) must file Form 5107, Affidavit for Disabled Veterans Exemption (PDF), with the Assessing Department before December 31 in the year in which the exemption is requested. Property owners are encouraged to apply early in the year, otherwise revised tax billings/refunds can become necessary. Official documentation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs establishing that the veteran meets one or more of the qualifying criteria listed above must be provided with the completed Form 5107.
